Russians are terrified of Kyrylo Budanov, the chief of the Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine (HUR).
The 39-year-old Lieutenant General is the real deal.
One of operations in which he personally participated, included the delivery of certain “cargo” deep into the territory of Russian-occupied Crimea.
After delivering the cargo, not everything obviously went the way it was planned — so he had to swim 8 km back to Ukraine, to get out.
In his usual calm manner, Budanov says that when he was swimming across to the territory of Ukraine from the occupied Crimea, he was thinking that they “all have to get out somehow.”
A lot of successful Ukrainian operations in the occupied territories and in Russia are the result of Budanov’s work, in conjunction with special operation forces.
What was hard to imagine just 12 months ago — devastating Ukrainian drone strikes on military and strategic targets deep in Russia — is now our daily headlines.
Russians tried to assassinated Budanov multiple times. They tried to poison him, with Budanov’s wife falling ill.
Budanov became the chief of HUR in August 2020. Since then, he became a kind of legend in Ukraine, a type of real-life James Bond.
