Which branch of the U.S. military is regarded with the least respect?

The Coast Guard is often the least recognized and respected branch of the U.S. military.

They are frequently overlooked, with some even forgetting their role entirely. For instance, in an old recruiting commercial, the jingle went, “Join the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines”—but the Coast Guard was left out entirely.

During the 80s and 90s, a time of relative peace, the Coast Guard played a critical role in combating the rise of cocaine smuggling. They were involved in more active firefights than any other branch, yet their efforts often went unnoticed by the public.

For most people, the Coast Guard only comes to mind in situations like a boat running out of gas or needing rescue. However, their responsibilities are far broader. They are integral to anti-smuggling operations, immigration enforcement, maritime law enforcement, and supporting the U.S. Navy. Despite their vital contributions, the Coast Guard remains an underappreciated and often invisible force within the U.S. military.
